Brazos River Ranching Town in Fort Bend

Listings in Simonton, TX

Welcome to Simonton, a rural Fort Bend County ranching town along the Brazos River, minutes west of Fulshear and within reach of Houston.

Simonton is a small incorporated city in northwestern Fort Bend County, Texas, set along the Brazos River about fourteen miles northwest of Richmond and five miles west of Fulshear. It lies within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area, but its character remains decidedly rural, shaped by a century and a half of ranching along the river. The community traces its origins to the early 1850s, when James Simonton moved his family from North Carolina to establish a plantation on the Brazos. After the Civil War the plantation was divided and sold, and the surrounding settlement that took his name evolved into a farming and ranching crossroads. Ranching has defined Simonton more than almost anything else. The area became known for purebred cattle operations, including the Bar C Ranch and its Brahman, Charbray, and Charolais herds, and that livestock tradition continues today in the form of residents who keep horses and cattle on their acreage. From 1898 to 1909 the town was also the site of a short-lived prison farm, where convict labor cleared land toward the Brazos for farming. Today Simonton is a quiet, low-density community of roughly 900 residents. Its location at the junction of Farm roads 1093 and 1489 places it just beyond Fulshear's rapid master-planned growth, giving it a distinct country feel while keeping everyday amenities, schools, and major road corridors close. For buyers seeking acreage, equestrian amenities, or a slower rural pace without leaving the Houston orbit, Simonton offers one of the last wide-open settings in this part of Fort Bend County.

About Simonton

Real Estate & Housing

Simonton's housing stock reflects its ranching roots: large acreage tracts, custom-built homes, and working horse properties rather than dense subdivisions. Many parcels are large enough for livestock, and gated equestrian communities such as Valley Lodge offer oversized homesites suited to custom homes, barns, and weekend retreats. The community has a very high homeownership rate, and much of the land carries an agricultural-use designation that reflects ongoing cattle and horse keeping. New construction in the wider area tends toward custom and barndominium-style residences, preserving the rural scale that defines Simonton as neighboring Fulshear urbanizes.

Neighborhoods

Simonton itself is compact, with homes and acreage spreading outward from the FM 1093 and FM 1489 junction toward the Brazos River. Valley Lodge stands out as a gated equestrian community with generous lots and community amenities. The surrounding countryside is organized into larger ranchettes and agricultural tracts rather than named subdivisions, a sharp contrast with the master-planned communities just east in Fulshear. This patchwork of acreage and quiet farm roads gives Simonton its distinctive open, rural setting within minutes of suburban conveniences.

Lifestyle in Simonton

Life in Simonton revolves around space and the outdoors. Residents commonly keep horses, cattle, and other livestock, supported by local services such as the Simonton Veterinary Clinic, and the pace is slower than in nearby growth corridors. The ranching heritage is visible in the purebred cattle operations that gave the town its identity. At the same time, Fulshear's shopping and dining and Richmond's civic institutions are a short drive away, so country living does not mean isolation. The Brazos River adds a scenic backdrop for a community centered on rural, self-reliant living.

Schools & Education

Simonton is served by Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, one of the largest districts in Fort Bend County. Lamar CISD covers Simonton alongside Richmond, Rosenberg, Kendleton, and surrounding communities, operating a broad network of elementary, middle, and high schools as the west side of the county grows. Students in the Simonton area attend campuses within the district, which continues to add facilities to serve the Fulshear and Simonton corridors. The district's presence links Simonton's rural households to established public schooling across the region.

Getting Around

Simonton sits where Farm Road 1093 and Farm Road 1489 intersect, about five miles west of Fulshear. FM 1093 is the local artery that becomes the Westpark Tollway corridor toward Houston, and Fort Bend County has planned an extension of the tollway west toward FM 1489 at Simonton, which would tighten access to the region's road network. The Grand Parkway (State Highway 99) loops north and east of nearby Fulshear, connecting to Interstate 10. Downtown Houston is roughly thirty-five to forty miles away, reachable via the tollway and freeway system.

Parks & Recreation

The Brazos River runs along Simonton's setting, and the broader area is rich in outdoor and historical attractions. The George Ranch Historical Park, a 480-acre living-history museum on a working ranch in nearby Richmond, preserves more than a century of Texas ranching life. Brazos Bend State Park lies farther south, offering trails, lakes, and wildlife viewing along the river. Within Simonton itself, the equestrian tradition itself is recreation, with riding and livestock on private acreage forming the everyday outdoor life of the community.
