Gulf Coast Port & Petrochemical Hub

About Texas City, TX

Welcome to Texas City, a deepwater port and petrochemical center on Galveston Bay, home to the world's longest fishing pier and a resilient Gulf Coast community.

Texas City is a city in Galveston County, on the southwest shoreline of Galveston Bay, roughly halfway between Houston and Galveston on the upper Texas Gulf Coast. Its location on the bay made it a natural deepwater port, and the city developed as a petroleum refining and petrochemical manufacturing center whose docks and industrial complexes have anchored the local economy for generations. That industrial identity is central to the city's history — and to its most defining memory. On April 16, 1947, the city was the site of the Texas City disaster, when a fire aboard the cargo ship SS Grandcamp ignited roughly 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate in the port. The resulting explosions killed 581 people and remain the deadliest industrial accident in United States history. The disaster reshaped industrial safety standards nationwide, and its memory is preserved in local memorials and the city's collective identity. Texas City rebuilt, and the port and refining complex continued to grow. Today Texas City combines that working waterfront with a family-oriented residential community of roughly 52,000 people. The Texas City Dike, stretching 5.3 miles into Galveston Bay, is recognized as the world's longest man-made fishing pier and anchors the city's recreation and fishing culture. Residential areas range from established in-town neighborhoods to newer master-planned communities such as Lago Mar, Tuscan Lakes, and Omega Bay, several with water access. Its position along Interstate 45 places both Houston and Galveston within a short drive. Public education is provided by Texas City Independent School District, which serves Texas City and neighboring La Marque across 14 campuses. For residents seeking Gulf Coast living, fishing, and industrial-sector employment, Texas City offers a distinctive combination of port heritage and coastal community.

City Guide

About Texas City

Real Estate & Housing

Texas City's housing spans a wide range, reflecting its port-town history and newer residential growth. Established in-town neighborhoods hold mid-century single-family homes and townhouses, while newer master-planned communities such as Lago Mar, Tuscan Lakes, Mar Bella, and Grand Cay Harbour offer contemporary construction, and several feature lakes or canal access. Waterfront and near-bay areas such as Omega Bay appeal to boaters and anglers. The market overall is broad and comparatively approachable for the Houston region, with options from starter homes to larger new builds, serving both the industrial workforce and commuters.

Neighborhoods

Texas City's neighborhoods divide between its older core and newer subdivisions. The established in-town area near the port and downtown holds the city's earliest housing, with mid-century homes on traditional lots. Newer master-planned communities dominate the growth areas: Lago Mar is among the most active residential neighborhoods, while Tuscan Lakes, Mar Bella, and Grand Cay Harbour offer contemporary homes with community amenities. Water-oriented areas such as Omega Bay and Hidden Lakes provide canal and bay access for boating and fishing. This mix gives buyers choices from historic blocks to resort-style, water-adjacent living.

Lifestyle in Texas City

Life in Texas City revolves around Galveston Bay. Fishing is a defining pastime, anchored by the Texas City Dike, a 5.3-mile pier that draws anglers around the clock. Boating, birding, and bayfront recreation are woven into daily life, while the city's industrial and port economy provides a steady employment base. The community carries a deep sense of history, marked by memorials to the 1947 disaster and a strong civic identity. Its location between Houston and Galveston gives residents easy access to urban amenities and Gulf beaches while keeping a working waterfront character.

Schools & Education

Texas City Independent School District serves the city and neighboring La Marque, operating 14 campuses with roughly 7,800 students across about 78 square miles. The district expanded in 2016 when it absorbed the former La Marque Independent School District, growing its footprint and student population. Texas City ISD provides the full range of elementary, middle, and high schools, including traditional and alternative pathways. As a mid-sized Southeast Texas district, it anchors education and community activity for the city and the surrounding area.

Getting Around

Texas City sits along Interstate 45, the main corridor linking Houston and Galveston, placing both within a short drive. The city's deepwater port and industrial complex support significant freight and marine traffic, and the Texas City Dike extends road access well out into Galveston Bay. Regional commuting centers on the Gulf Freeway corridor, while the Port of Texas City and nearby refineries anchor local employment. Air travel is available through Houston's airports, including nearby Hobby Airport to the north.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Texas City is defined by the water. The Texas City Dike — the world's longest man-made fishing pier — stretches 5.3 miles into Galveston Bay and offers fishing piers, boat ramps, and shoreline access around the clock. Boating, kayaking, and birding are popular, and the bay's wetlands support wildlife viewing. Parks, sports facilities, and community centers serve neighborhood recreation, while nearby Galveston provides beaches, attractions, and additional waterfront amenities. The city's parks and open spaces round out a recreation profile built on Gulf Coast access.
